Welcoming a new baby into the world can be the most beautiful and overwhelming experience at the same time. “Children don’t come with an instruction manual” states author Danielle Braff of The Chicago Tribune. Every day is a learning experience and your best is good enough. Every parent’s journey is unique. Follow your intuition and do what you believe is best for you and your child.

In our super connected world of social media, many articles are shared with opinions on the best things you can do for your baby. Many of these resources are inspiring and valuable. The downside to this abundance of opinions is that they create a cascade of emotions for new parents always trying to be the perfect caregiver. 

The most important thing you can do for your child is to shower them with unconditional love and support them in their growth. Take a deep breath and embrace the journey of parenthood. Your child will match your energy. If you are stressed and insecure, so to will be your child. Stop comparing yourself to other parents, and set the example for your child to embrace who they are with compassion and love. Don’t be so hard on yourself, you are doing great!

Self-care is vital. Make time for yourself before the baby arrives, as well as once they are here. Your life changes dramatically once a baby comes along. Making time for self-care and self-love will allow you to be more present and appreciative of all the precious moments.

Staying deeply connected with your partner is crucial. Making time for a weekly date, whether at home or by hiring a sitter for a night out, is vital to stay connected and support each other during this transitional time in your relationship. You will grow together.

If you are a single parent, reach out to your community for support and connection. You will be surprised and delighted at how many people in your life will show up to share their love for you and your new bundle of joy. 

When it comes to supporting your baby with their sleeping patterns and feeding routine, doing what you feel comfortable with for the wellbeing of your child is always the best. This applies to breastfeeding versus formula feeding, co-sleeping versus sleep training. 

We always recommend breastfeeding due to the enormous health benefits for mom and baby. Difficulties can arise for a number of reasons. Nursing is not always easy for everyone. Having a doula and/or lactation consultant in your life can greatly increase your chances of success. Also, trained pediatric and prenatal chiropractors are able to find and correct areas of interference in mom and baby that can allow for easier feeding. This includes increase milk production, boosted immunity against mastitis, as well as increase in suckling and attachment for babies. In some cases, formula is necessary, and it is okay. Let go of any guilty feelings and know that you tried your best, and it is enough. 

When it comes to sleeping patterns, there are many opinions on what to do. We encourage everyone to try co-sleeping and adapting your routine to the needs of your child. There is a lot of research supporting the benefits of this method. However, it is not for everyone. Try different approaches and do what makes you feel most confident. If it breaks your heart to watch your baby cry alone, listen to your intuition and pick them up and show them love. You can never give your baby too much love. If you feel confident that they will self-soothe, by all means follow your instinct. There is no right or wrong way.
